Salal 2.5 Quart Baking Dish

138.00

Wheel thrown stoneware covered baking dish with white slip manzanita leaf design. Inside is glazed with a white food safe liner glaze while the outside is left unglazed (except for the handles) to highlight the beauty of the clay and the visible brush marks showing the process of handmade. I love the simple earthy beauty of clay and choose to highlight it rather than cover it with glaze whenever I can. I use diamond sanding pads to make a smooth touchable surface and finish it off with food grade mineral oil.

Like ferns, Salal bushes are also everywhere in the western cascades region. But even though common, they have a secret. Many people don’t know that their berries are edible and for the most part, delicious. The flavor varies quite a bit from plant to plant but overall, I’ve found them to be really good and they pair well with blueberries and huckleberries, particularly when cooked together in a fruit crisp.

Tips for baking with pottery:

Never use on the stovetop. When baking, place piece in a cool oven, then turn the oven on, allowed the piece to heat up gradually. Clean using dish soap and scrub brush. Soaking overnight as needed is fine. Handwashing is preferred. Re-apply mineral oil as desired for an extra smooth finish. Microwave safe.

This listing is for the piece pictured. It is handmade and as such each piece is unique and beautifully imperfect. Thank you so much for choosing handmade!
