Radical Act Salal Mug // Pink on Black Clay

About the Mug: Wheel thrown black clay mug with white slip salal leaf design. The inside is glazed with a white glossy liner glaze; the outside is unglazed matte white slip and dark brown/black stoneware clay body. I used a diamond sanding pad to sand the outside so it is smooth and velvety to the touch.

About the Design: Like ferns, Salal bushes are also everywhere in the western cascades region. But even though common, they have a secret. Many people don’t know that their berries are edible and for the most part, delicious. The flavor varies quite a bit from plant to plant but overall, I’ve found them to be really good and they pair well with blueberries and huckleberries, particularly when cooked together in a fruit crisp.

Hand stamped quote around the mug says “Self care is a radical act” which is an idea first talked about by Audrey Lorde when she said, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” More about how radical self care strengthens communities right here.

Taking Care: This listing is for the mug pictured. It is ready to ship and is dishwasher and microwave safe although hand washing helps prolong the life of all ceramics. This is because pieces clink together in the dishwasher which tends to cause chips. Thank you for choosing handmade!
